Microsoft Teams integration Enterprise Grid
Available on the Enterprise Grid plan
The Microsoft Teams integration is available only on the Enterprise Grid plan.
Self-hosted Plane only
The Microsoft Teams integration is supported only on self-hosted Plane instances (Commercial Edition). It isn't available on Plane Cloud yet.
Before anyone can connect, your instance administrator must complete the app registration and configuration.
The Microsoft Teams integration brings Plane into Teams. Create work items or Intake requests from messages, link a thread to a work item so replies and comments sync both ways, preview Plane links inline, and ask Plane AI questions, all without leaving Teams.
What you can do
- Create a work item or an Intake request from a message. On any Teams message, open the message actions and select Create Work Item.
- Link a message to an existing work item. On any Teams message, select Link Existing Work Item and enter the work item's ID.
- Sync a thread with a work item. Replies in a linked thread become comments on the work item, and the work item's activity is posted back to the thread.
- Preview Plane links. Paste a link to a work item, project, cycle, module, or page, and Teams shows a card with its details.
- Add yourself to a work item. Work item preview cards have an Add me to Assignees button.
- Use bot commands. Mention
@Planewithcreateto create a work item, or withaskto ask Plane AI.
Connect Plane to Teams
Connecting takes two steps. A workspace admin first connects the workspace to your Microsoft tenant. Then each person connects their own Microsoft account.
Connect your Microsoft tenant
Role: Workspace admin, signing in with a Microsoft account that can grant admin consent for your tenant.
- In Plane, go to Workspace settings → Integrations → Microsoft Teams.
- Select Connect. A Microsoft sign-in page opens.
- Sign in and grant the requested permissions.
The tenant appears under Connected Microsoft Teams tenants. A workspace can connect more than one tenant.
Connect your personal account
Once a tenant is connected, each person connects their own Microsoft account. Without it, you can't create or link work items, add yourself to them, or use bot commands from Teams.
- In Plane, go to Workspace settings → Integrations → Microsoft Teams.
- Under Connect your personal Microsoft Teams account with Plane, select Connect.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account you use for Teams and grant the requested permissions.
If you try a Plane action in Teams before connecting, Plane replies with a Connect account button that takes you through the same steps.
Use Microsoft Teams with Plane
Create a work item or an Intake request from a message
- On a Teams message, open the message actions (… → More actions) and select Create Work Item.
- Choose the Plane project and select Next.
- If the project has Intake turned on, choose Work Item or Intake. For a work item, also choose its work item type. Select Next.
- Fill in the details. Work items show the project's fields, including its custom properties. Intake requests use a shorter form.
- For a work item, turn on Sync this thread with work item updates if you want replies in this thread added as comments on the work item, and the work item's activity posted back to the thread.
- Select Create Work Item or Create Intake Issue.
Plane posts a card in the thread with a link to the new work item or Intake request.
Link a message to an existing work item
- On a Teams message, open the message actions and select Link Existing Work Item.
- Enter the work item's ID, such as
ENG-123. - Select Link.
Replies in the thread now sync as comments on the work item, and its activity is posted back to the thread.
A thread can be linked to one work item, and a work item to one thread. If the thread is already linked, Plane shows the linked work item with a Disconnect button. If the work item is already linked to another thread, Plane links to that thread so you can unlink it there first.
How thread sync works
Once a thread is linked to a work item:
- A reply in the Teams thread becomes a comment on the work item in Plane.
- A comment on the work item in Plane appears in the Teams thread, labelled with who wrote it.
- Updates to the work item are posted to the thread.
Preview Plane links
Paste a link to a Plane work item, project, cycle, module, or page in Teams. A card shows its details, such as title, state, assignees, and priority for a work item.
Work item cards have these buttons:
- View in Plane opens the work item.
- Add me to Assignees adds you as an assignee.
- Unlink Thread removes the link between the thread and the work item, when the thread is linked.
Previews work only for links on your Plane instance's domain, the one your administrator set up in the Teams app.
Use bot commands
Mention @Plane in a chat or channel, followed by a command:
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
@Plane create | Opens the work item form, the same as Create Work Item |
@Plane ask <question> | Asks Plane AI. For example, @Plane ask what's blocking the login release? |
If you mention @Plane without a command, Plane treats your message as an ask question. Plane AI replies in Teams, with preview cards for the Plane items in its answer.
Permissions and access
Plane applies your workspace and project permissions in Teams too:
- You can create work items only in projects where you can create them in Plane.
- You can link and preview only the work items you can see in Plane.
- If you can't access a project in Plane, you can't work with it from Teams.
People in the same chat or channel who haven't connected their account can see the cards Plane posts. When they select a Plane action, Plane asks them to connect their account first.
Manage the connection
Disconnect your personal account
- In Plane, go to Workspace settings → Integrations → Microsoft Teams.
- Under your personal account, select Disconnect.
You can't create or link work items, or use bot commands, until you connect again.
Disconnect a tenant
Role: Workspace admin
- In Plane, go to Workspace settings → Integrations → Microsoft Teams.
- Under Connected Microsoft Teams tenants, select Disconnect on the tenant.
WARNING
Disconnecting a tenant removes the integration for everyone in it. Plane deletes every thread link and every member's personal connection for that tenant. The work items and their comments stay in Plane, and the messages stay in Teams.
Removing the Plane app in Teams
Removing the Plane app from a chat, channel, or your own Teams doesn't change anything in Plane. Your connections and thread links stay in place and start working again when the app is added back. To remove the integration, disconnect the tenant in Plane.
Troubleshooting
Create Work Item doesn't appear on messages
- Check that the Plane app is installed in your Teams. Go to Apps in Teams and search for Plane. If it's not there, ask your administrator to upload it.
- Check that your workspace has a connected tenant under Workspace settings → Integrations → Microsoft Teams.
Plane asks me to connect my account
Your personal Microsoft account isn't connected yet. Select Connect account in the card, or follow Connect your personal account.
Link previews don't appear
- Paste the full Plane link, not a shortened one.
- Check that the link is on your Plane instance's domain. If you use more than one domain for Plane, ask your administrator to add each one to the Teams app.
The bot doesn't respond
- Check that the Plane app is installed in the chat or team where you mentioned it.
- Check that your personal account is connected.
- If it still doesn't respond, ask your administrator to check the setup in the administrator guide.
Replies don't sync to Plane
- Check that the thread is linked. A linked thread has a Plane card showing the work item.
- If you created the work item from the message, check that Sync this thread with work item updates was on. If not, link the thread with Link Existing Work Item.
"You don't have permission to create work items in this project"
Your role in that Plane project doesn't allow creating work items. Ask a project admin for access, or choose another project.
